COLOMBIA: Para-political scandal comes to a head
At the time of writing a former leader of the Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC), Salvatore Mancuso, is due to go on trial in Medellín where he could implicate politicians, public officials and landowners who had links with the AUC. Senator Gustavo Petro, of the opposition Partido Democrático Alternativo (PDA), claimed on 16 December that there is so much resistance to the truth coming out that President Alvaro Uribe's own life could be danger, not to mention those conducting the upcoming trials.
